How to compress pdf with os x 10.6

Wouldn't it be a lot easier just to assign a keyboard shortcut to the "Compress" command in the Finder? Lost your password? Powered by the Parse. I use my faithful Butler to run Finder's usual operations, like copying, moving, and deleting files, making both my mouse and trackpad completely useless devices.

As a keyboard-only user, I also wanted to add some other Finder operations, such as file compression. Here is a small AppleScript, to be run from Butler or any other script-launcher utility , that will compress the current Finder selection into a. You can launch this script from Butler, triggering it with an abbreviation or a keyboard hotkey.

My script is based on this hint and turns it into a Finder-selection script. I didn't test any compression levels, as my only point was to be able to compress a Finder selection directly, using ditto. Also, it was tested in The following comments are owned by whoever posted them.

This site is not responsible for what they say. Nice idea about the script however the applescript code isn't clean so I cleaned it up for you. Here's some of the coding issues I saw I didn't write the basic script code, I just improved it.

The author's script only works when you select one file, thus my script works the same. The code can probably be improved to allow more than one item selected. So your problem seems to be that you're selecting several items in the Finder window I dropped this part of the original code, but you could try to merge this code with mine [ Reply to This ].

I'm using it already, thanks [ Reply to This ]. Why write a script when the function you need is built right into the OS?

And presumably the dimensions of any images within the PDF would want to be preserved, not decreased. Using my method reduces the file size to under a half, typically from about 10MB to about 4MB. By the way, I used this method to reduce the size of a jpeg image in iPhoto. Perhaps I have not understood the implacations of your comment, but I thougth that to reduce the size in MB was the aim, so that the image could be stored more economically or sent by email. PS Perhaps I have posted this under the wrong section, and it should have been under something like "reduce the size of a jpeg".

But the question is in regard to a PDF , not an image. And, as already stated, presumably the dimensions of any images within the PDF would want to be preserved, not decreased.

Your suggestion would decrease the dimensions as well as the file size. Yes, as long as you make it clear that your suggestion would decrease the image dimension size as well as the file size. Earlier in this thread, the following site was mentioned — see how it reduces file size bytes without reducing dimension size pixels The size is very large about 14 Megabytes. I do not know how to reduce the size so that I can send it via Mail.

I have used the standard "Reduce File Size" Quartz filter but find the resulting files way too grainy.

I want to have a filter that is a stand between but cannot seem to make a filter using the ColorSync utility that applies to PDFs. I want a free method to do this of course and am pretty confused as to why Apple hasn't given the user the option to control the output of the PDF in Preview. That is basic PDF viewer material. I have a pdf file with lots of high-res photos in it. Is there a good way to reduce the file size while keeping the photo quality reasonable?

A free utility that allows users to adjust the level of photo quality would be great. In order for FCP to be able to log and transfer my video from my panasonic camcorder, I shoot on a camcorder setting that creates great video, but the files sizes are huge.

Almost 1gb a minute. The video comes in x , apple prores , I want to edit the footage and then export the timeline using a setting that will drastically reduce the file size. Whilst trying to enlage the font size of my emails in my inbox, the font size of my sidebar went huge! I am creating a digital album booklet for a band I manage, basically I took a high res photo and type the lyrics of each song over it, then added additional pics, the booklet is roughly 33 pics.

I know there has to be a better way to get this done. Right now each photo is roughly 3. How do I get the size down? The Apple info says use pop-up menus to select search criteria, but where is that? I wish to have the folder show all documents bigger than a certain size ie. My next question, is can I then drag to the Trash from that folder and know that they're deleted from their original location. I assume appearing in a smart folder is like an alias, its not reall copied to this new location.

How can I download a a large-size update when the download starts over every time the connection is cut? Can I use a download manager with Software Update?

I am a technologically challenged old lady with wonderful cd's that I want to transfer to an external hard drive that my SONOS system will recognize. I want to plug in both my computers input and the hdmi audio out from my monitor, and use the same speakers, but I don't want to have keep switching the cord, so I bought a splitter. Do you think it will reduce the sound quality significantly? I want it to be easy, but it's not worth cutting way down on quality.
